It is with
great reluctance,
that I trouble
you
with this request,
because so lately
as the 17th March
last, I made application to
promotion in the service. But,
having regard to the tenor
of the reply
which I then received, and
to the
pressure of
pecuniary
difficulties, which I spoke of in the letter,
which is enclosed - to which I
beg to refer you for
particulars - is
still existent,
I venture to hope that
you
may perhaps be able to comply
with
my request for promotion, or
may see
fit, in consideration of my
prolonged acting services, in offices
more important than that of Harbour Master, to afford
relief, by sanctioning
an increase
of my salary.
I have the honour to be
Sir,
Your
most humble
& obedient servant;
Wm. M. Hastings.
Assistant Harbour Master.
